Want To Keep Your Enamel Healthy? Avoid Doing These 11 Things

cosmetic dentistry Centreville

1. Chewing on hard foods

We’re looking at you Beef jerky and pitted fruits.

2. Chewing on hard things

This includes fingernails, pencils, pen caps, and ice.

3. Grinding your teeth

If you grind your teeth, consult with our team. We have treatment options that can shield your smile.

4. Eating too much sticky food

Gummy candy, dried fruit, and even protein bars can break teeth.

5. Drinking anything besides water frequently

If your teeth are bathed in soda (sugared or diet), juice, coffee, or sports drinks habitually, you are asking for dental issues.

6. Playing sports without a mouthguard

Sports pose a major risk of tooth damage. Most children are required to wear a protective mouthguard on the playing field. But fewer adults wear mouthguards for recreational activities like mountain biking and skiing. Stock mouthguards are one-size-fits-all but rarely fit well. Custom-fitted mouthguards from your dentist are more comfortable than the cheap boil-and-bite type.

7. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush

A hard-bristled toothbrush can damage teeth and cause gums to pull away. Brush away food bits and plaque with a soft (or extra-soft) toothbrush.

8. Ignoring dry mouth

Saliva is important. Saliva is necessary to neutralize acids and rinse bits of food off of teeth. It also helps clean the teeth of leftover food bits, helping to prevent plaque buildup. Constant dry mouth, or xerostomia, can lead to decay. Talk to your dentist if you have a dry mouth repeatedly.

9. Using teeth as tools

Take a minute to find a pair of scissors before you tear open a package of lunch meat or pry the lid of a medicine bottle. Use a Nutcracker if you are eating unshelled nuts. A quality dental crown is never cheap.

10. Ignoring bad breath

Bad breath is often associated with bacteria build-up in the mouth. It might be a symptom of accelerating cavities. Discuss it with your dentist. (Don’t be embarrassed. We treat bad breath all the time.)

11. Ignoring jaw pain

If you notice inexplicable jaw pain or notice a clicking sound, be sure to schedule an appointment with your dentist right away! These symptoms can be signs of a serious condition called temporomandibular disorder or TMD.

Is it too late? Have you already broken or chipped a tooth? We can repair it at Centreville Dental Wellness Center. There are several restorative and cosmetic dental treatments for chipped or cracked teeth.

What Our Patients Say

I went to see Dr Vakay to get a dental appliance for my sleep apnea and ended up switching to the office for my routine dental care as well. The whole staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they made me feel very comfortable and valued. I honestly have never received such a thorough cleaning before and my snoring has stopped. Very happy with my experience!

I broke a front tooth crown off at the gum line. Dr. Abel was able to see me within a couple of hours After assessing the damage he presented me with several options for a repair and devised a way to hold a temporary tooth in place. Permanent repair is scheduled. I couldnt be happier with the care I received.

I just recently moved to Northern Virginia and Centreville Dental Wellness Center was recommended to me and also had great reviews online. My first appointment was 23Jun2023 and everyone from the ladies at the front desk to Dr. Abel and his assistant were outstanding. Thrilled to have found this amazing team!!

Nina A.

Dr Abel, the front desk, hygienist team and everyone in between is At. I have gone to CDWC for years and sometimes travel 2+ hours for a visit. They provide organized, and trustworthy service, but more importantly personable with their care.

Centreville Dental Wellness was and is an amazing place. I had multiple issues and they were very patient with me. They are very experienced and know their stuff. I love them all particularly Dr Abel who took a lot of time with me and made sure I was straight. I pray that God continues to bless them and their business.

WOW! I look amazing!! ; My 2 front teeth were worn and chipped. It affected my smile and confidence. After the restorative (yet gentle) work by the team at Centreville Dental Wellness, I can truly say this practice is second to none! The crowns look so natural and I'm so glad I can smile again!! When my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas... said "my 2 front teeth" and thanks to the masterful cosmetic work done by Dr. Vacay and her assistant Christina, my Christmas wish came true! Gotta give a shout out to the friendly and supportive front office staff as well, Tonia, Sylvia and Sogand. Merry Christmas to all!!

Dr. Vakay and her team are excellent. They are careful, thorough, and attentive to the patient's concerns. They take the time to explain how to maintain healthy teeth and gums. I have always been completely satisfied.

I've only ever been to one dentist, and don't have any plans to change that! Dr. Vakay, Dr. Abel, and the entire staff at Centreville Dental Wellness Center provide a patient experience that is both timelessly reliable and constantly improving. Recently, I came to them with jaw pain related to TMJ, and after real discussion concerning all my options, they set me up with a kois product that has eliminated the pain and dramatically improved my range of motion. It's been a true success story!

Ok, this is the first review I have EVER written. This morning I had a procedure done by Dr. Vakay with her assistant Christina, that was, without exception, the best experience at a dentist office I have ever encountered. The professionalism and expertise between these two was nothing short of a 'dance." | felt that seamless interaction, put me at ease. The front desk is wonderful to work with. I left another practice in Haymarket because of the way they handled the financial. I have great dental insurance and was told as I was sitting in the chair, that the doctor would not do the procedure unless I gave them a credit card. At which point I demanded to see the doctor and told him I was aghast at his greater interest in getting paid than my teeth and walked out. This is how a dental office should run, and they have hit a very high mark as the daughter of an orthodontist. Bravo Team Centreville Wellness.
