Dry Mouth Can Cause Dental Problems

A decline of saliva flow resulting in a dry mouth is a common problem, especially among older individuals.

A dry mouth is not only uncomfortable, it can cause tooth damage. Saliva is required to keep the mouth lubricated, wash the food from teeth, and neutralize the acids that can cause plaque. Extensive cavities can arise in the absence of saliva for dental patients with chronic dry mouth.

Symptoms of dry mouth include:

  • Dry, red or grooved tongue
  • Persistent sore throat or hoarseness
  • Sticky feeling in the mouth
  • Saliva that seems thick and stringy
  • Bad breath
  • Struggles chewing, speaking and swallowing
  • Changes in taste
  • Difficulty wearing dentures (Mayo Clinic)

Contributing conditions include medications and treatments, reduction in the body’s capacity to metabolize medication, chronic health dilemmas and poor nutrition.

For example, chemotherapy medication can lower saliva production, and radiation treatments to the head and neck can damage salivary glands, decreasing saliva production.

Other medical ailments include diabetes, stroke, or yeast infection in the mouth.

Decongestants, blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and painkillers (all used extensively in Centreville) are some of the medications that can bring about dry mouth.

It is common for allergy-prone Centreville Dental Wellness Center dental patients to complain of dry mouth when they start taking antihistamines during the hay fever season.

The following can also contribute to dry mouth:

  • Snoring or breathing through the mouth
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Tobacco use (cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco)
  • Recreational drugs

If you suffer from dry mouth, it’s important to pay special attention to your dental health. The first step is to talk to a professional. Call Centreville Dental Wellness Center to schedule an appointment with Doctor Rena Vakay.

What Our Patients Say

My experience with Dr Vakay and her team has been extraordinary. Very professional, very competent, and very caring. The culture exudes kindness and caring. Dr. Vakay's follow up with her patients is unusual in my experience . She called me in the evening to ask how I was doing. I have never had a doctor do that for me.

A colleague recommended Dr. Abel and my first time there was the best dental experience I have had in 43 years. I had my 2nd appt earlier this week. Another great experience. Everything from reception, cleaning, to leaving was great. The hygienist was so gentle, yet did an extremely thorough job. Excellent dental practice!!

Robin S.

Kelley M.

I've been coming into this office for years and every time they've been so warm and accommodating. Dr. Vakay and the whole staff really puts in every effort to make sure her patients are taken care of with the most high quality work. She fixed my Maryland Bridge so now my teeth look amazing and my smile gives me so much more confidence! I could not recommend this office enough!

Sydney C.

I have been using this practice for many years. The staff continues to be professional and thorough. The front desk staff is well versed in insurance practices and billing. They help me understand my benefits better than my insurance provider. Holly is a very professional dental hygienist who addressed several teeth and gum health issues by giving very practical tips for me to implement for better personal dental hygiene. Dr. Abel's practice is well run! They use the latest imaging technology that support accurate diagnostics. You will not be dissatisfied.

Professional, personable and all around AWESOME! I've been a fan since day 1 and can't say enough about this team! From the front office to the back, these folks take the edge off of "going to the dentist". Dr. Vacay leads the way with her expertise, gentle hands, and personal touches (she texted me on the evening of what I thought was a pretty minor procedure that day just to see if I was comfortable-WOW! Her assistant Christina really knows her stuff and moves with precision and a gentle touch. From the moment I walk in to the warm greetings of Sogand, Tonia, and Jessica, to the moment I walk out, I hardly remember I was "just at the dentist". Thank you, Centreville Dental Wellness Center! You make going to the dentist a pleasurable experience!!
